Be careful what you place on the floors
Remove shoes especially high heels before getting in the house to prevent gouges on the floor
Place padding underneath furniture to prevent scraping. Put drip trays under plant pots. Also remove shoes or sandals when getting to the carpet
Check on the high traffic areas
![]()
Place mats over the areas that are mostly used especially at the door entrance and near the bathroom door. This will save on cleaning and prevent wear and tear
Regularly sweep or vacuum your floor
Removing dust and debris regularly helps prevent dust and grime from getting embedded in the carpet or any other floor. Vacuum your carpet at least once a week and as required depending on the number of people in your house or office. For hard surface flooring go over it with a damp mop or cloth to keep it looking great and to prevent stains

Schedule an in-depth cleaning after every few weeks or months depending on the use. You may want to deep clean your floors once a week. It is recommended to deep clean your carpet twice a year and this may mean engaging a cleaning service company like our company Green Icon Cleaning Services since they are well equipped with the right tools and detergents for the job. For tile floor, you may decide to tackle grout as you do thorough cleaning like removing stains on it if any
Wipe up spills and tackle stains fast
Always wipe up spills immediately they build up and dry water that accidentally spills on the floor. Wood floors can be easily damaged by water and so you want to ensure that it is always dry and free from any water spills
Less product more frequency
![]()
Use less cleaning products but then clean more often and not the other way round
Blot stains
Use a damp white terry cloth towel to blot out wet stains from a carpet. Continue blotting with fresh clean terry towels until the stain disappears. Cover the damp spot with a dry towel until the carpet is dry. Leaving the damp place open will attract dust and give rise to a new spot
Close curtains and blinds
![]()
Close curtains and blinds in places where extreme sunlight hits your floor. A combination of heat and sunlight can cause your floor to fade
Take Special Precautions when moving heavy objects
Use a dolly with wide-base air tires when moving heavy appliances or furniture. First, place on the floor a piece of quarter inch plywood to protect it. Always ensure that your floor has adequate protection before moving any heavy object
Deodorize mats using natural vinegar solution
Simply fill a spray bottle with vinegar solution then spray over the smelly mats and allow them to dry. You can as well deodorize your carpet and mats using a baking powder. Put the baking powder in a shaker jar then sprinkle it evenly over the carpet or mats. Give it time to absorb the smells and dust then vacuum
How to clean different types of floors
- Laminate floors
![]()
Dust, vacuum your floor then use damp mop to clean the laminate floors. Do not use soap-based detergents since they can leave a dull film on the floor
To remove stains and marks from the floor, dilute vinegar with water and use the solution
Shoe polish on the floor can be removed using nail polish remover containing acetone or other mild solvents
- Ceramic and quarry tiles
![]()
Sweep and wash with a mild detergent solution then rinse with clean water. Do not use wax polish since it causes the tiles to be slippery. You can also use a steam cleaner
- Wooden floors
![]()
Sealed floors only require to be swept and damp mopped. Too much water causes wood to swell and spilt so only use a damp mop or cloth
For unsealed and waxed floors, sweep regularly and re-polish occasionally
Kindly note that you should never vanish a waxed floor since it will not dry
- Corked floor
![]()
Vacuum regularly to prevent scratching, immediately wipe up the spills and wash the corked floor once a week
You can use natural cleaning products like vinegar and soapy water solution. Place in a spray bottle a quarter cup vinegar with 1 drop of dish soap and gently combine them with warm water by rocking them back and forth. Do not shake the solution since that would create suds. Vinegar being naturally acidic works with soap and helps to break down dirt, cuts through build up and disinfects. Spray the floor a section at a time and wipe with a damp microfiber cloth as you go
- Bamboo flooring
![]()
Compared to hardwood floors, bamboo is more sustainable, beautiful and in some instances softer and prone to nacks and scratches. Be extra cautious regarding regularly sweeping up dirt and debris from a bamboo floor. To clean the floor, mix a quarter of mild or PH – neutral soap in a bucket of water. Use a very damp mop and wipe up excess moisture with a dry microfiber cloth
- Linoleum floor
![]()
True linoleum is made from linseed oil, resin, limestone, wood fiber and cork dust and colored with mineral pigments
Clean this type of floor as you would cork floor. Mix a few drops of dish soap and hot water in a spray bottle. Squirt a section of the floor at a time and wipe with a damp micro fiber cloth or mop
- Vinyl floor
![]()
Clean this floor in a similar way to cork and linoleum floors. Mix gently a quarter cup vinegar with a drop of liquid soap and warm water in a spray bottle. Spritz one section of the floor at a time then use a damp micro fiber mop to wipe. You can use a steam cleaner for deep cleaning. The steam aids in removing stains and bacteria so that you are left with a spotlessly clean and safe floor
.Natural stone floors
![]()
For sealed stone walls, use a PH neutral non-chelating cleaner that will not react adversely to the minerals in the natural surfaces
For unsealed stones, clean with a micro fiber mop and hot water only since chemicals would penetrate the stone. Use a steam cleaner in case of stubborn dirt
